Very nice 96 and welcome to the world of VSaabs!
I've been driving these for 30 years and I wouldn't take yours out in the snow and SALT of New England. It just kills them. It's really sad because they perform so well in the snow.
Now if you want to go out for a drive on a nice clear day when the roads are dry, you can. But you'll probably pick up salt. It gets in every nook and cranny and joint and causes corrosion. Rust never sleeps and it's no fun.
Know that I do have a VSaab I drive in the winter as my daily driver. It's a sacrificial VSaab, to some degree. It's a '71 96 that's solid, but pretty ugly. It will never be a nice VSaab. So of the 5 I have, I pick this one to drive in the winter. I spray the inside of the rockers and inside the doors with oil regularly. I also check it over every summer and take care of the rust that does develop on the undercarriage. I use a wire brush on my grinder to get it off, then prime and paint it. NO undercoating that can hide rust! This fall I pulled the drivetrain to fix a broken freewheel, and went after the engine compartment and especially the front suspension mounts the same way- wire brush, primer, and paint.
So that's my advice- make it a 3 season car. Wait for a good rain in the spring to wash off the salt, then drive the doors off until the first snow in the fall.
