There are two types of mixture adjustment depending on the age of the carb. The old type of mixture adjustment is done by adjusting the needle seat height via a screw/nut poking through the float chamber thingy at the bottom of the carb (I think). On the newer carbs (1976 or so onwards) you use a special tool (hex key with a dooby to stop the diaphram from moving)and adjust the mixture via the top of the carb where you put oil for the damper. This adjustment will raise or lower the height of the needle. The mixture can be adjusted by hand/ear but do not expect toe get it perfect,(err on the rich side for performance and to protect the engine) particularly on an old car. The Zenith Strombergs where never that good a carb anyway.
You can tell which type of carb by the presence or lack of the adjuster dooby under the float chamber. (Dooby - new word for the day!!!)
Best of luck
