In '96 I purchased my 80 99 in Boston and drove it across the country to my home in Bellingham, WA. The fuel started cutting out while driving across NY. It finally died outside of a Buffalo toll both. When I cracked the fuel filter brown crud ozzed out. I walked to a parts store, purchased two filters and drove the rest of the way home with one more filter change.
Once home I took out all of the rusted metal parts to the gas tank (the tank in an 80 is plastic) replaced with good parts and cleaned out the nearly clogged pickup snorkle. Any car that has been sitting for a long period of time will have problems with rusting parts in the gas tank. The car that I purchased had sat for five years prior to a restoration (partial obviously if they did not bother to check the tank) and upgrade to a 16vt. Good luck!!!
