I have a '75 with the bushing completely blown out on it. This is the second 99 that I've experienced this problem on. My '78 had the same problem. The 95/96 had a full width solid casting housing the steering rack and it was lubricated with a grease fitting near the pinion gear. The 99 housing is only a casting at the gears, the tube housing the other end of the rack is press fitted to the casting. I don't know how susceptible this is to misalignment over a long period of time. I've thought of redesigning the housing and creating a bronze bushing for the outer end to replace that POS plastic thing. The only problem with the bronze busing idea is that it might have to be line bored after installation. I've also thought it would be better to lube the rack with chassis grease like the 95/96 racks, which I never had any problems with in 17 years of driving them. The 99/900 racks are lubricated with transmission oil, which is much more likely to leak out than heavy grease.
