I always drove my 96 V-4's with the free-wheel operational because I like it that way. Free-wheel isn't necessary on the V-4's though.
What happens is that the free-wheel hub and rollers wear and eventually the hub starts to slip. This is another very good reason why the transmission fluid should be changed religiously on the 95/96/97's. Keep the fluid clean and things don't wear as quickly. The problem is worse on later cars because SAAB went from a 6-roller hub to a 10-roller hub, i.e. smaller diameter rollers. It is expensive to replace, if you can even find the parts anymore. Many people, when faced with the expense of replacing the freewheel, opt to disable it. This can be done by just locking the white plastic lockout piece on top of the transmission in the locked position (remove the rod and tighten down the bolt holding the white piece), but the best way (though more expensive) is to weld the lockout pawl into the locked position in the free-wheel hub.
