I used to work on these cars years ago. I would NOT consider any SAAB automatic of this era. When I worked at the dealer in '74-'75, I don't recall a single automatic sold out of our dealership that did not come back in the first thousand miles with heavy gear oil from the differential housing leaking past the single seal on the pinion shaft and getting into the inner workings of the automatic transmission. Apparently the seal developed a flat spot while the car was sitting out in the lot awaiting a buyer. Our district service rep told us that SAAB had three of their engineers at the Borg-Warner plant in England trying to figure out what could be done to correct this problem and others. Internally this was the same B-W 35 that Volvo was using and they were both built at the same plant.
As for the mileage, it doesn't seem very high at all. If it was really only about 27,000 miles, that only works out to approximately 1,000 miles per year for it's age. My ex-wife and I put 1,000 miles on the '79 900GLE during the first week of ownership. 270,000 is a little over 10,000 miles a year. Average mileage per year in the USA is considered to be about 12,000 miles. I put nearly 80,000 miles on a '78 99L the first two years that I owned it and it had 143,000 on it when I bought it. One week after I bought it I set out on a trip of over 1,900 miles. That was 900 miles each way from my friends house in New Haven CT to Kentucky and the car was parked for the week we were there.
