My high-handed and arbitrary opinion is that all those 96es you read about overheating have got bad cooling systems, that's all. The early 96 system was just barely adequate, but it WAS adequate -- as long as the plumbing was in good shape and the radiator unclogged. A lot of the people who worry about 'improving' their cooling are really just trying to postpone biting the bullet and having the radiator boiled out. (If you soup up the car, or start towing a mobile home, or anything else that makes the engine generate more heat, then you may well need to increase its heat rejection capacity by getting the radiator recored with more rows, fitting a wider Sonett radiator, converting to a pressurized system with an add-on overflow tank, or some combination. See West of Sweden's website for some examples.)
So if your car isn't overheating now, I wouldn't worry about it. And if it starts overheating, I would find out why and fix it, rather than just changing the fan. The only situation in which a fan helps anyway is when you have to sit in traffic for a long time -- at highway speeds it actually impedes airflow through the radiator and eats up power. If you DO find you're getting occasional overheating from sitting for long periods in stop-and-go traffic, I'd suggest switching to, or adding, an electric fan -- that way you can turn it off (manually or thermostatically) when it's not needed, saving more of your engine's mighty 65hp for moving the car!
