On my 72 99 I used thin Aluminium plate that I sanded with course sandpaper to get a brushed look. the job is very fiddley and neccestates the removal of a significant proportion of the dash. To cut the switch holes out you will need a fret saw and to glue/clamp the Al to a piece of thin wood to avoid ripping the Al. The end product looked ok....but I would like to do it again very very carefully as small imperfections do show up.
For another funky idea try polishing the steering wheel centre and boss (the sports wheel on 99 EMS's and 99T's) This mod looks very nice as you can easily get a mirror finish, and as a bonus the plastic centre also comes up a treat polished. be warned though...you may be blinded by a stteing/rising sun occasionaly as it reflects of the steering wheel :)
