99T wheel bearing

Hi all,
I need to replace the right front wheel bearing on my 99T, and I have some questions as to how the whole thing comes apart. can I just remove the steering member and wheel bearing (after pulling the hub/rotor assembly), like the c900 (according to the Bentley manual), or do I need to pull everything including the drive shaft?
The Haynes manual seems to suggest that the whole drive shaft has to come out with the bearing. Never taken one of these apart before, so I wanted to resolve any ambiguities beforehand.
Also, the Bentley 16V manual recommends against using a ball joint separator fork, saying that it might damage the steering member. Does this hold trure for 99 suspensions? Would it be better to unbolt the ball joints from the A-arm if I'm intending to pull the whole steering member out?
thanks,
Rowan
