99 fuel pump removal

My 1970 99 has a transplanted 1975 B engine in it, and the fuel pump is starting to leak and cause problems. It's one of the two piece ones with a split in the middle and a cone filter thing that screws on. It's powered by the little rod that runs to a lobe on the camshaft or something inside the engine (not sure on this motor as I've only taken apart V4's and the 1709cc Triumph engine). I want to remove the fuel pump and replace it with an electric one along with a pressure regulator. My question is: How should I seal the old hole? If i leave the rod in the hole, I'm afraid that it may impact-hammer itself out of any cover I put on, and I'm not sure if i should make a cover and seal it with a gasket, or what. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, especially if someone has already done this to a B engine. Thanks in advance,
Brendan
