Pete, Having that same belt in my '72, I know why you'd want to upgrade. I have made the upgrade that Karl mentions going from the loop style to the modern clip style. Trust me pete...that's the way to go. The newer style retracts much better than the loop ones. Also, because your not using the loop, but a clip, you get an extra few inches of length. Also, the newer style floor posts are a few inches taller, making the added belt length about 5 inches. The actual belt length is the same on both reels, but used better on the new ones. Use 4 door ones for your upgrade. You will have to cut the seam on the end of the belt that bolts to the floor, to be able to insert the reel assembly into your rear panel without breaking the reel plate. Then resew the end of the belt with heavy nylon thread (easy to find). The doner belts will seam to be stuck when you install them. You will need to re-seat the inertia device wich is a simple ball and cup setup. You can easily view and understand it by taking the screws of the cover on the '73 belts. All later ones have rivets, so you can't inspect them (or re-seat easily). A small hole drilled in the cover of the rivited ones will allow you to re-seat it with a small allen key. The ball must be in it's bucket and in the downward position on all belts...they are all exactly the same. Just make sure you don't take off the spring cover side!!!
