Cryogenic freezing. Basically parts are brought from room or a higher temperature down to a very cold temperature very quickly, then slowly brought up to room temperature again. This hardens the parts, extending their durability (and can also make them more prone to cracking...). You would want to do this to bearings, shift forks, laysafts, synchros etc. You could probably do it to gears to, but most people have gears shot-peened. Shot-peening is sort of like sandblasting except it isn't abrasive. Small objects are blasted at parts and as they bounce off they help harden the outside of the part. (the part gets smushed a little bit, it's called strain hardening). I hear that 99Ts came with shot-peened gearsets to help them last under the load of the more powerful engine.
The next gearbox I have rebuilt I am going to shotpeen all the gears and have most of the other parts cryogenically frozen.
