Melanie: Have you drained the oil and put new detergent oil in it?
What makes you think the oil pump is clogged? Does the oil light come on,
or do you have an oil press guage? On old engines I used to put a cup of
kerosene, (or coleman camp fuel) in the engine and run it for about 2-3
minutes before I drained the oil. That usually cleaned the inside of the
engine, and from then on the oil stayed clean. It would be easy to do and
should loosen up any crud in the oil passages. I know the manual recommends
pulling the engine and tranny as a unit, but I have always pulled the engine first for two reasons: 1) There are fewer parts to take off, and I
have never had any trouble seperating the engine from the Trans. 2)I tried
to remove the trans. on a 73 that had been sitting for years and the little
projection on the end of the trans. that fits into a round rubber bushing
inside the cabin, had frozen to it and wouldn't budge. I* finally had to
take a torch and burn the rubber from around the trans mount to get the trans. out. V-4's are easy to get out. Just take the front grill out, (2 or
3 bolts), the radiator, remove the two bolts on each of the exhaust pipes.
Next remove the nut from each motor mount so the engine is free to lift.
Disconnect all the appliances; throttle lever, fuel line, oil sender line,
generator and starter. I think its a good idea to remove the carb and distributor, so you dont knock them off accidentally. After the exhaust pipes are off, I fit the end link of a 2 or 3 foot chain over the top
bolt of the exhaust header on each side. This provides a well balance lifter you can hook a hoist to. The real trick to removing the engine only
is that before you loosen the bolts that bolt the engine to the trans, pick
up the engine with the above listed hoist enough to slide a six inch long
2 by 4 (wood) between the bottom of the trans and the floor pan. Then let
the engine back down a little to tak the strain off it, not completely, then go ahead and loosen the engine to trans bolts and take them out.
When all the bolts and the starter are out, you can pull the engine forward
to clear the trans. (Picking up on it a little bit so as not to bind. What
I usuall do is get the engine free of the tranny, check for any wires or
appliances that are still haqngin, and then just push the car back out from under the engine. I've got a Haynes manual, that covers all 96's. Tell
me what you need copied, and where to send it. also email me if you have any questions. Good Luck ! It's really easy: 1/2 day, maybe six hours for first time. <KsKid@mail.saabnet.com>
