I think you hit it right on with respect to the throttle response... seemed much quicker in the 99... lighter flywheel? I suppose combined with the gearing it could feel quicker.
That said, you make another good point in differentiating between different types of speed. My 99 felt faster by my memory in the low range (maybe just a better 1st gear...the stock 1st gear in the 900 gearbox is useless).. but what I love about the 900S is how it accelerates on the highway...say 40-55ish (whenever 3rd runs out of revs), and likewise 60 to 70/80 in 4th... dropping down from 5th to 4th gives plenty of vroom for passing maneuvers that I didn't have in the 99. The turbo would make that midrange speed even more impressive, and maybe bridge the gap giving a stronger 2nd gear.
Having never driven a 99T I can't comment on the turbo lag. From what I understand it was a big turbine and took some time to spool. The 900T has appreciable lag as well, compared to say a porsche 951.
Ahh memories...someday when the budget permits a hobby car maybe I'll explore it further. Cheers
