Congratulations Melanie ! A couple of thoughts while you have the engine
on the bench, you probably know this already, but: I've found it is not a
good idea to try to turn the engine using either of the fibre gears. Use a
socket on the bolt on the end of the CRANKSHAFT ! Also the engine doesn't
seem to want to turn backwards, I dont know why. I always turn it clockwise, (facing it). I suggest leaving the front plate off until the
last minute, when you can line all the dots on the timing gears up, then you know you have it at TDC. Then stick the distributor in with the cap off, and you can set the rotor to #1, plug. Most of the distributors have
a mark on the edge of the distributor that you can line a mark on the rotor
with for basic timing. BTW, that "blue glue" has ruined many an engine by
flaking off and getting sucked into the oil passages where it sticks and clogs them up. Good Luck from "The Kid"
