I have never had any problems with coolant, but from
years of reading literature like "Hot Rod", Motor Trend,
"Road & Track", i have come away with a Hot rodders fear
of ruining the cam bearings on a new rebuild, if they
are not primed with oil before the first start up.
Whether there is any factual evidence for this fear or
not I dont know. I can tell you the way they prime their
engines is by turning the oil pump around with an electric
drill enough to build up oil pressure in the engine and
get oil to the camshaft galleries. On the V-4 this would
involve pulling the Distributor out to access the oil
pump shaft. My recollection of that orifice is that it
is a rather narrow passageway, and might require some
special tool to get onto the oil pump shaft. Failing
that, I dont see that it would hurt anything to pull
the plugs and turn the engine over with the starter
until you got some reading on your oil pressure guage
(if you have one). That should ensure oil in the galleries.
I can't offer any other advise, other than some friends
of mine believe strongly in silent prayer!
