I looked at a fuel pump on http://www.partsamerica.com listed for a 1972 Ford Pinto 2.0L and the mount and method of operation looks identical to the pump on my 1972 V4 96. The inlet and outlet tubes are turned slightly different but otherwise it looks the same. I would guess if the "shorter" part made a difference it would be in the part that contacts the pushrod or the length of the stroke of the pushrod. I would guess that if you took the old one to Checker/Kragen/Schuck's and compared it you could decide. The pump was listed as CARTER M6564.
