m songer asks, "ok kansas, I understand, sortof. Does the right side suck or blow when connected to the air cleaner? And what does the ? hose do to the left side? Isn't that vaccuum? It's the same plate that the brake vaccuum is on, perhaps they're not connected. Or maybe you can help with this, should I vent the left side to atmosphere, connect right side to air cleaner, and use a vented oil filler cap? or the same with non-vented cap? Or maybe you can come up with the correct combination since mine is nolonger stock and I'm not sure what will be effective while not pressuring the case to the point of blowing oil past the valve cover gaskets."
That's a batch of questions, I'll give it my best shot. The right (passenger in the US) side in my '69 1.5L valve cover has the oil filler cap on the "top" (leaning to vehicle right) of the valve cover, and a nipple centered fore-and-aft on the inside wall of the valve cover, which (I believe, but lacking the stock carb/air cleaner setup am not certain without reference to pictures or a stock vehicle) would lead to a nipple on the air cleaner housing entering on the clean-air side of the filter. This would supply filtered air to the crankcase which in most conditions would be sucked through the crankcase and through the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve to the intake manifold, putting crankcase vapors back into the combustion system to be burned in the cylinder. So the right side sucks.
EXCEPT, if you picked up the previous post, when there is too much pressure past the rings (blowby) for the limited suction through the PCV valve to handle, then flow will be the other way, crankcase vapors will go into the clean-air side of the air filter and be sucked through the carb and get burned up that way. So in that case the right side blows.
The hoses to the plate: One is full manifold vacuum to the brake booster, don't interfere with that system. The other is from the PCV valve that is screwed into the plate. That goes to the nipple on the L valve cover. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, it's too late to go look.
Since you are no longer stock I am hard pressed what suggestions to make without knowing how you are modified.
