Good point about the Sonett and the VW. All I know is that in the course of recharging, some sulphur dioxide gas is created by the battery. I think the amount of gas created may depend on how much charging is going on.
I bought a 4 ga battery wire kit from a car stereo shop and they tried to sell me one of the dry cell "fumeless" batteries. The guy was basically saying that for a high powered sound system (which I don't have) a lot of fumes are created by the battery.
Another point: most older vehicles I have seen usually have some degree of corrosion around where the battery is mounted, presumably from the battery fumes(?)
So maybe under normal circumstances, there just aren't enough fumes to worry about?
I bought one of those marine battery boxes to put it in. It's not airtight. I was just wondering whether it was worth the effort to vent the box to the outside of the car.
