I need some advice. Today I went to pick up a 2002 Black 9-5 station wagon w/ 172 miles. I drove it a week ago Thursday 12/26 at night, upped the bid Fri am, and made a $500 credit card deposit on the phone to hold the low 28K price. I emailed the salesman a list of requests, have had to chase him to get him to respond and finally set up the appt to get the car this afternoon.
I arrived at 3- while it was still light and insisted on inspecting the car in the day light and testing some of the systems. There were 7 small marks and scratches on the side and back of the car. The car had not been washed or waxed. The front, and both sides of the hood were badly scratched and marred. The driver's side headlight jet did not work. Only half of the requests I had made were done. At first the salesman said that they would send the hood to be repainted, but I read the small print on the warranty and any alteration could possibly invalidate the coverage on the body. I suggested they take a hood off an new 2003 9-5 and put it on the 2002 and they said they could fix the other marred spots. The salesman kept on apologizing and said he should have checked the car more closely, but he is always apologizing when I speak to him. He thought something must have happened when they pulled off the protective coating, but the coating was not on when I drove the car last week and I don't buy that as an explanation.
I did not pay for the car or sign anything ; said I would come back Sat. morning. The salesman seems disorganized. I must have made 15 calls after the offer to try and get hold of him. Yes, it was the end of the year, and yes the Framingham Saab City dealership is under reconstruction, but this is no way to run a business.I asked that all the recalls be checked, and wanted a vehicle service history to check the recall work. They printed it out, and it did not indicate anything. But also produced a separate sheet with a campaign modification of the signal that hadn't been done yet and won't be till they get the part. Some of the requests they are putting off to the 30 check.
I did request a carfax report and that was clean.
I have half a mind to walk away and ask for my deposit back. Was asking the hood to be switched a good idea? Will I have trouble with the warranty.
I would greatly appreciate feedback. What seemed like a great deal, is becoming burdensome and I am a bit spooked.
