I don't know about the pumping the pedal thing, never heard of that and don't see what the point would be. If you're not going to restart for a while, the extra gas you're squirting into the manifold will just evaporate.
As to the rough idle at cold, maybe your idle jet is 1 or 2 sizes too small...? Or maybe a bit of crud got into it during shipping or while you were installing it...? I used to have a Fiesta with a similar Weber carb (28/32 instead of the 32/36 you probably have) and the idle jet would get plugged really easily. When that happened the car didn't want to idle and you had to keep blipping the throttle to keep it from stalling. Fortunately the jet is easy to reach and I got to where I could pull over and clean it in under a minute!
Also don't overlook the possibility of a vacuum leak. This lets extra air into the engine without having it go through the carb at all, so it leans out the mixture. It tends to have the most effect at idle because the engine isn't drawing as much air at idle, so the amount added by the leak is a bigger percentage of the total. And it tends to be worse when the engine is cold because the engine needs a richer mixture to idle smoothly when cold.
