Probably not holding fuel pressure >>>

Get a pressure guage on your system to check how quickly the pressure drops after shut down. When engine is up to temp and pressure is not present the fuel in the lines vaporizes and you must crank ( fuel pump on ) long enough to purge the vapor from the lines. other responses give some of the possible losses of fuel pressure - tho I do not think the return line contributes to maintaining fuel pressure - I believe that valve is there to prevent pressure in the wrong direction. The pressure regulator in the fuel distributor could be gummed or blocked by crud. I had minor problem of this type that was solved when I installed new injectors - mine were obviously not holding rest pressure.
