You can take up some slack by placing a crowbar between the upper chain guide and the cylinder head. I begin by rotating the flywheel over until there is more slack on the upper half of the chain than the lower half. I have taken up to about 1/4" of slack out this way, but never 1". I didn't think the pressurized chain tensioner could even handle that amount. Are you should that the tensioner didn't come apart and drop down into the bottom? (the spring and tensioner, not the tensioner housing).
