Wow, I am king of the chumps. A year and a half after posting the above message, I'm now looking at needed to again (!) replace the transmission, clutch and shifter assembly. Total estimated cost this time around? $3200 at an independent Saab repair shop here in San Francisco where I now live. Unbe-fricking-livable.
The "dream-like" driving I mentioned 18 months ago only lasted about 3 months and then it's been headache after headache since then. I lost 1st and 2nd about a week ago and finally had to have it towed to the shop.
I'm not saying the guys who did the work the first time around (AAMCO shop in North Carolina) ripped me off but there's something pretty d*mned fishy about now needing to COMPLETELY replace everything they did less than two years ago. Yes, I live in San Francisco and yes, SF hills are hard on manual transmissions, but still, this is ridiculous. A little voice inside my head tells me I got taken for a ride the first time around.
Moral of the story: Don't skimp on the work just to save a few bucks on the labor charges. Labor rate for the shop here in SF is $95/hr and I'm sure there are cheaper shops around but I'm not going through this hassle a third time.
Hope you all have better luck with your Saabs than I've been having with mine. I love the car but it's a d*mned money pit.
