A cautionary tale...

I wish I'd known about this board a year ago...
About a year ago, I started having MAJOR problems getting into reverse and 5th. I see by other comments on the board that this is a common problem (I have a 96 900set) but I didn't know that at the time. Anyway, the car clearly needed work but, as I am a humble student, I didn't have the green to get the work done. So I've spent the last 12 months agressively forcing the car into reverse. And when I say "forcing," I mean "bicep-straining, sweating, cursing FORCING."
I finally came into a bit of cash and took my baby in for the long overdue gear work and, lo and behold, I'm told that had I brought it in a year ago, I could have just gotten the linkage replaced but my "abuse" (his words, not mine) of the car over the last year is now going to cost me a new shift linkage (he says I've bent mine) and rebuilt transmission. Also, since the transmission is already out, they're also going to replace the clutch, machine the flywheel and replace the real oil seal. The clutch cable is relatively new (replaced in Oct '99) so is staying. Total cost: approx. $2000. Ouch. (This is better than the $4500 Ed G. spent, but that's cold comfort at this point.)
The moral of my tale is: As soon as you start experiencing shifter problems, bite the bullet and deal with them immediately. Man-handling the shifter (as I did) is a bad bad thing. You have been warned.
