Trying to determine if IAC has failed. Posted by iveand [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I have been having significant starting issues in the cold lately (-20F to +30F ... every day same issues). I only have problems with the first start of the day, after that, it runs fine. Here is a summary of what is done already.
-IAC cleaned 2 times (second to re-lubricate)
-new spark plugs
-2 bottles of techron 20oz.
-new air filter
-all vacuum hoses checked (replaced crankcase-TB one)
-flushed engine 2 times, now running synthetic to battle sludge (unrelated?)
Along the way I have done quite a few other things in the past few months ... previous posts attest to the "sludge" battle going in in my 2.3, as others are battling as well. I hope to win.
Anyway, now to my question. With the key in the "on" position, but the engine off, the IAC "hums" fairly noticibly. Loud enough that I can hear it just by having the hood up. Everything seems to point to a bad IAC (it only has problems at idle when starting ... starts, dies, starts, dies; after "warming up" it runs fine ... idle is a bit sporadic, but something "frees up" after starting it and holding the rpms at 2500 for a few minutes to warm things up). Fuel filter and pump were replaced less than a year ago. I simply have a "mixture" problem from all diagnosis that I have done. Has the IAC failed? Can I check with a 9v battery over a few of the pins to see if it responds? Any advice on how to troubleshoot this?
