Salutations:

I'll almost guarantee they traced a rattle to the chain case and went directly to the timing chain instead of taking on *both* the timing and balance chains - which probably made up half the rattle they were hearing.

Did they ask you about pulling the block at all?

Normally - with any engine so equipped - you do both systems with the block out so you can inspect the balancing apparatus. You check for oil take-up problems because all kinds of crap gets in the sump when you take out a chain with the block in. If you still have the chain they removed - you can measure it to see if it is long enough have been rattling on it's own and if any parts of the link they cut are missing.

Cam drives are not part of the '60,000 service' unless it's a V6.

There may be an 'official' update on that says you *can* use an open link chain with the block in, but I'll eat my hat if it *doesn't* provide for a formal balance chain inspection and a sludge check procedure with timing cover off completely. If that's not on the workorder or time sheet - you have a toe hold.

You may need to leap frog the peaking order at the dealer at the start if you want to work along these lines. Get in touch with the Dealer President and/or Dealer Group CEO and explain that you are not sure that your timing chain was replaced according to recommended factory procedure and that you want to review the time sheet and work order with him or her - just between yourselves.

Procedures may, tragically really, have been overlooked by well meaning service professionals in the hustle and bustle that is all just part the exciting SAAB family experience in your town.. :) ..

If everyone can keep it civilized - you can sometimes get out with a honest arrangement. If they are not willing to play ball - find a competing SAAB dealership in the area and explain what you think may have happened. They will open a file for you if they think the first shop isn't working to factory specifications.
