Engine seized - advice sought, please

Hi all, I need the counsel of my peers on a problem.
My engine seized up a couple of weeks back, apparently the warning lights were on, but the driver continued going. No sign of oil leak, plenty of oil in the engine, and the electrics work fine. The most popular theory is oil-pump failure.
Apparently, it will cost about £2500 for Saab main dealers to supply and fit a new engine. I could replace with a Recon for a grand, but that would severely decrease both my confidence in the car, and it's resale value.
So, I'd like to get my engine reconditioned, but I want to be sure that:
1: The mechanic won't strip the engine, THEN try to rip me off;
2: The price I pay will be agreed in advance.
Another question - is there any way to diagnose the problem without the costly option of stripping the engine?
Thanks in advance,
JayBee.
