I've got a really weird problem. I have a 96 900SE Turbo. On a pretty regular basis my APC/Turbo gauge will start going haywire - swinging wildly, reading steady in mid yellow zone at idle, etc. When the check engine light is on, this seems to have no effect on drivability. But when I clear the code, performance is directly related to whether or not the gauge is behaving or not.
Here's the weird part. I can start the car, no CEL, idling fine, gauge steady although sometimes obviously reading high for idle, and I can get the gauge to move by pressing on the dash in certain spots or by slamming the driver's door. When I do this the guage starts going bonkers and the engine starts spitting and sputtering, will die, and I get a CEL on restart with code 106, MAP circuit malfunction. The car will then idle fine with no problems irregardless of what the gauge is doing. I guess the ECM is compensating for a bad circuit when it throws code 106 allowing the engine to operate normally.
Sounds like an obvious short in the MAP circuit in the dash. Is there anyway to bypass the gauge? Does the gauge actually send a signal to the ECM? Seems like it should just be an indicator by receiving a signal from the ECM. All other gauges work fine. I have replaced the MAP sensor with no effect.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
