Hey all,
I just put a Sach's clutch kit in my 1995 900SET last month. I did it with a friend and it is quite and undertaking. I did had the benefit of his extensive tool collection and relative mild January weather in his driveway. It took us about 4 full days.
Some things that we came across that may be of interest:
* We did not realize how much had to come out. (No manual...although we did reference eeuroparts.com quite a few times for some diagrams. Right-click to open the image alone in it's own frame to get a better view). You are going to have to pull both drive shafts, shocks, control arms, etc. That is _everything_ from the transmission outputs. IIRC the driver side drive shaft has a support point that it shares with the alternator. You have to break the alternator free. Good time to replace serpentine belt. To get the transmission out we had to drop 3/4 bolts off the subframe.
- Parts:
There is a small plastic bushing which accepts a male shaft from the mechanical linkage to your transmission. IMO a very critical part that should not be made out of plastic. Definitely pick up one of these while you are there. I did not realize mine was shot and after we had the tranny back in I could not get it into reverse. This was the cause. About $15 USD at the dealership. There is a Saab procedure on the net for locking the shifter and transmission in 4th gear with a specific diameter drill bit. You should pick up an oil seal for each drive shafts mate with the transmission. They are interference fit so have some sort of method to heat the flange and cool the seals.
- Tools:
. 3 jack stands
. a couple bottle/hydraulic jacks
. drop lights
. Some method to remove sludge on the flywheel and give it a clean but light rough finish. We used a mild abrasive pad on a air grinder.
. buckets/bags to group like parts/bolts
. coolant (you are going to have to pull some hoses to get your hands in there)
. Brake fluid/cheap tool to help bleed them on reinstall
. full set of metrics sockets/wrenches
. full set of torx bits
. inspection mirror
. large blunt striking device
. Determination, patience, the ability to say f' it and walk away for a few.
. A good friend to work and share the experience with. Thanks Ken. :)
Don't spend a fortune on the tools if you don't have them. We picked up a full set of torx for like $18 USD and a discount store. If one of them broke, which they didn't, oh well. One of the bolts on the transmission housing->engine bolts is very difficult to get off with a standard socket. We had to grind down the diameter of the socket to remove the bolt.
We took pictures for a good part of the job. Mostly in sheer amazement that we had to take the entire front end out. If anyone is interested I can post them. Just reply and let me know.
