How do you R&R the range switch?

Steve -- how did you R&R the switch? Both the old switch and the new switch appeared quite sealed to me. The wires go in to a part on the body that is metal on the front and one giant glob of glue-like plastic material on the back. It looked like I would have to break the mess quite forcibly.... I guess I can fool around with my old switch just for kicks.
I like the idea of rebuilding over replacing where possible, but it didn't look feasible to me.
