Hi folks,
As another recent victim of idler pulley failure, I've been reading through the many previous posts on the short belt mod and wondering whether to go ahead with it.
Being in Europe, the cost-saving benefit of this mod is lost, because there are relatively few cars here that need a belt even as long as the so-called "short belt" (the cost of fuel here makes V8 engines a luxury), so even when you can find the belts they tend to be at least as expensive as the original Saab part.
The 2460mm Contitech belt mentioned in a post by Anders exists in the catalogues, but many suppliers say it's not available (with only two OE applications for it in Europe, no supplier is gonna fill his shelves with that model). For what it's worth, those two applications are Mercedes-Benz, from their 4.2 litre V8 engine, and Audi, from an S4 V8 Quattro. Neither could be described as a cheap source of parts, but at least there's a couple of options there for European owners.
I guess there's still the main benefit of having one less idler pulley to fail, so I'm gonna try M-B for a belt today and hopefully join the short-belt clan.
Incidentally, since I had to tow my car home after that pulley failure, I'm curious to know, what is the problem about towing cars with automatic gearboxes? I followed most of the handbook instructions (neutral, forwards only, not too fast/far, etc.), but the recommended extra 2 litres of ATF was of course unavailable. What's the issue here?
Regards,
Andy
