Vlad, that's the best advice I've had all week!
Mercedes surprised me by not having a short belt on the shelf, and although they could get one fairly quickly from the factory I couldn't be without a car for any longer, so I ended up having to go back to Saab and getting both pulleys and a long belt. Back on the road again now, but next time it goes up in smoke I'll order from the US and go short. Two pulleys and a long belt, bought from Saab in Switzerland, cost about 170 US$. Glad I wasn't paying for Saab labour as well!
For anyone in doubt, the job is not difficult at all, especially with the excellent instructions available on the Saab DIY site. Just takes a little patience to feed the new belt onto all those wheels. The half-inch "breaker bar" (I would call that an extension bar for a ratchet with a half-inch end fitting, but I can't help being a Brit...) is the perfect tool for pulling the tensioner bearing against its spring. Worth getting for this job if you don't have one. The Haynes manual confused me by saying that I should pull the tensioner bearing in an anti-clockwise direction. Dunno where Mr Haynes was standing when he changed his belt, but he had me pulling in the wrong direction. Best to say pull it towards the front of the car to take the tension off the belt.
