CEL & Failed California Smog Posted by ken [Email] ![]() ![]() |
1996 Saab 900s, 2.3L 225K mi.
Last few weeks: CEL started to come on (non-blinking) as a regular feature. Changed air cleaner, ran Techron injector cleaner, & switched to 91 octane. Reset CEL by battery disconnect. At first, it would go long distances before tripping again. Now, every 60 miles. Mileage was falling & can was hesitating at low idle. Also, fuel pump went out in February-replaced.
This past Wednesday: Reset CEL & went in for smog test. Failed funcional self-test because I didn't drive enough miles. Also failed emissions test for high NOx. Results:
HC 18(15MPH), 12(25MPH) Passing in CA is up to 54 & 37, respectively.
CO .01(15MPH), .00(25MPH) Passing in CA is up to .50 & .47, respectively.
NOx 867(15MPH), 923(25MPH)Passing in CA is up to 430 & 717, respectively.
Thursday:
New NGK plugs, properly gapped
New PCV nipple (broken)
New PCV hoses (brittle)
Friday/Saturday, car is running much better. No hesitation at idle and mileage appears back to normal but #%$! CEL still comes on at 60 miles (done so twice now).
Curious on thoughts on CEL (as well as NOx).
Backflow valve?
IAC?
Catalytic???
