I have no experience working on my own (or anyone else's) car at all. I've been spending on average about $1.2K - $1.5K per year on repair/maintenance of my 98 900SET 65K mi. at the local Saab dealer. Parts are expensive, but you can buy them online at a discount. If you can do your own work (and with what you've described it sure sounds like you can do a lot of basic things) then you'll save at least 50% of what I spend. My new strategy is to buy parts I need online to save the $$$ and then take them to an indy to do the work and stay away from the Saab dealer where they charge a premium.
Your car is not on warranty so you do not have to use a Saab dealer to do the work. Budget-wise you'll probably spend $500 - $700 a year average if you can do your own work. And even I can change a DI cassette and we're talking NO real mechanical skills on my part.
