I removed the header pipes once w/o too much trouble when I did the head gasket replacement at 125k. I was lucky, the bolts were all OK... but everything was really tight and creaked a lot, no surprise given the extreme heat that area is subjected too. Dealing with the oxygen sensors was no problem.
What caused a problem was reconnecting the exhaust pipes. You need a long (at least 12") socket extension to get in there and you gotta torque the hell out of the bolts. I think the rear one was harder to access. anyway, with my extension, I couldn't get them torqued enough. When we restarted the engine, it was extra loud because the exhaust joint was leaking. Had to take it to a shop for a free 5-second hit with an impact wrench and that cleared it right up.
