super tight oil filter Posted by MJM [Email] (#872) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MJM) on Fri, 30 Apr 2004 05:27:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I tried to help a fellow Saaber ('96 900S) yesterday with an oil change, but we couldn't get the doggone filter off. I had two filter wrenches, a "cap" type that fits over the end of the filter and a strap type. The cap just rotated around the end of the filter when we cranked on it and the strap wrench started deforming the filter body when it was heaved on. We stopped at that point. I bought this particular strap filter wrench when I had my 5.0 Capri, so it's sized for larger filters than the Saab filter; so 'plan b" is to see if a smaller diameter strap wrench is available.
Does anyone have any tips on removing a seriously tight oil filter? I've always been able to get the filter off before this. Do they tighten at the threads, or does the gasket glue itself to the mounting boss? FWIW the oil was last changed about 4-5 months ago.
thanks!
Mike
