Alright man, I was too cheap to buy an oil filter wrench before I started (didn't realize they were as inexpensive as they really are) so I tried with my hand first... not even close. After that, I moved straight on to the flathead screwdriver idea... first time I torqued it, I tore the entire filter in half. Ended up with a pair of huge bush pruners trimming all of the scrap metal off so all I had left was the end gasket and my oil filter housing.
Someone told me to unbolt the entire housing so I could grip it better and get better leverage. I started to unbolt it but ran into a space problem... the last bolt had about three inches of space before it hit another very solid part. Couldn't even begin to get a wrench in there. I'm sure I haven't expressed this well enough, but this was a six hour process!
I finally started wedging the screwdriver between the gasket and the oil filter housing and actually started hammering it between the two just off center so I didn't hit the pipe from the housing. More less, I retreated to chiseling. Alas, this does have a happy ending. I got the screw driver to go all the way through from roughly ten o'clock to two o'clock (if you can picture that). At this point, it was jammed. As I was trying to pull it out, I realized that it was finally inching a little. I took this as a great sign and started torquing it. Two minutes later, it was off.
All I can say is use a ton of PB Blaster and, if you can, take the entire housing off. It will make the whole process less painful. If you have any more questions, let me know... might have happened to me as well.
