That is a potentiometer that feeds 5th bow position to the controller. My guess is the difficulty in replacing it is in routing the wire. The pot comes off with 2 screws, but you probably have to remove the rear seat and panels to run the cable. After I replaced my tonneau position sensor, the roof sequence would start and then quit. I raised the 5th bow slightly (as you would if manually lowering the roof), and the sequence would proceed a little further, then I would move it a little more. Eventually the 5th bow was in the proper position, and the roof worked fine. It is possible that the 5th bow is just a little out of position.
To check the pot you will need to disconnect the wires from the controller (unplug), and loosen or remove it from the 5th bow. You can then move the arm and check for a varying resistance. Be careful not to move the arm too far, as the pot is designed to rotate less than 360 degrees. Did the roof work after they repaired the wire? How many times?
