Repairing cracked oil pan

Hello, fellow Saabis.
I've been lurking here for a couple years, ever since I bought my 1995 900 S in 2002 (my first car). Reading the boards has been very helpful in learning my car's systems.
It was towed earlier this year. After retireving it from the tender mercies of the NYC Marshals, I discovered a small crack in the bottom of the oil pan.
I've since relocated to Orangeburg County, South Carolina, where local mechanics helped me identify the damage. Welders report that the pan has to be repaired from the inside as well as the outside, because it's made of aluminum. Apparently, that means the pan has to be removed from the chassis. Here comes the bad news: all the people I've asked so far tell me that the motor has to be taken out in order to get to the oil pan.
My first response to this new was to epoxy the thing myself. A reaction more than a response: even if it was feasible, I don't expect it would work for long. Just an idea, that wouldn't do too much damage to my wallet, or my schedule.
Is there a less labor-intensive way to go about this repair? Any observations would be appreciated.
