Hi,
I have a 97 Saab900S 2.3na (RHD) with 104,000Kms on the clock. The clutch is on its second cable and I carry a spare in the trunk. However, its getting heavy in action and is very snappy on engagement. If I have the engine off and depress the pedal and let it out slowly I can feel friction/sticksion. This I believe is the cause for the snappy action of the clutch operation. I have read on this forum that you need to change the clutch other wise the clutch cable replacement interval gets shorter. What I believe is the clutch release bearing actuation fork and shaft assemble is worn causing the problem. Bill H states that he has many miles on his clutch and has replaced several cables. I also believe that in just changing the cables the clutch operation will get heavier and lead to failures of the self-adjusting mechanism.
While in the UK last month I purchased a Saab 9-3 clutch pedal assembly along with the master cylinder. Looking at this I was surprised to see that the master cylinder was made of plastic. Assuming the plastic is strong enough I think this is good as if any moisture in the hydraulic fluid it will not corrode the master cylinder assembly. Another point is that the pedal length to the pivot looks longer as the hydraulic pedal pushes rather than pull. I still have other bits to get and will be getting a new slave cylinder assembly. Has anyone used a 9-3 pedal assembly? I would be interested in hearing from them. I know people in the States can use the kit from Taliaferro but this is for LHD cars. I intend to take a week off work to do this conversion. I will be making an engine support beam to hold the engine while the gearbox is out. Does anyone know how high the car should be lifted to remove the gearbox? Also is there any other points or procedures I should be aware of.
Many thanks, Martin Barnes New Zealand
