I tried this with my '97 2.3 and it did allow the engine to rev better but the real result was the loss of low end torque. (since the intake lenght has been shortened it changes how the engine has to suck in air vs. rpms, there is an exact science to it that I don't quite know)
Then i tried a long intake tube adapter from a honda or something CAI that I bought at the local auto parts store. The filter ended up in the bumper right below stock air box. This worked really well, good low end torque but still good reving due to a good air filter and whatever +2hp there is to gain. I don't recommend doing this, and have since put the stock air box back on. I managed to stuff the 900 into a 12" puddle during a TSD rally and killed the MAF from the water that go sucked up in the tube (lucky not to kill the engine).
The 3" intake tube is probly the best way to go without getting crazy. the only other thing that might work would be to get a reasonably sized cone filter (K&n makes lots of sizes) and get a tude to push it as close to the head light as possible and then use a sheet metal divider so that the filter is sucking air from outside and not the engine compartment.

I like the sound of a sport exhaust on a NA NG900
