I own a 1990 SPG and a 1996 900SE. For me, the 96 has more interesting dash funcations for long trips. Just things like temp, MPG, weather band, 6-CD changer. You didn't mention if you are looking at auto or stick. The mileage on the auto is worst for everyday stop and go highway rushhour , my wife gets ave. 22 mpg. But, I have seen as high as 38 mpg on long steady travel. My only comlaint is the A/C in the 96, has known leak issues. Brakes, belt and pulleys, O2 Sensor, DI Cassette, tires, muffler system replaced, pretty normal for this car (even the DI).
The SPG has good acceleration, but the 96 isn't a slouch either. The NG has softer suspention, struts vs. a-arms in the classic.
It takes awhile to get used to the rear seat functions. You loose the flatcargo area like the classic, but gain a 60/40 split that is nice for smaller, taller stuff. The whole rear "bar" drops (were headrests are)
and creates a good lump behind the seats.
"but if I have to look forward to a nickel-n-dimed-to-death headache, I might as well hold on to my C900s"
