Just returned from looking at a 2 owner gold/black 98SE convert w/ 68K. Body and paint look very nice for age, leather interior is equally good cond. Here are some of the things I took note of, and would welcome any input.
There is a slight "twittering" noise coming from the front end around 45mph - (first thought was that is sounded like the tires.) There are 4 new Toyo Proxys with about 5K miles on them. The seller said he had just rotated them and felt that had something to do with it. It was not alarming, just noticeable. Also, the steering had a tendancy to pull to the right a little bit. Don't know if there is any relationship to the tire noise (?) but I assume a front-end alighnment might correct the problem.
The auto trans shifted a little bit abruptly. I am used to an Audi A4 auto trans which in my opinion shifts like butter - so maybe this is just the way the Saab auto trans works. Again, nothing ghastly, just took note. (I have only previously owned a 5 spd 9-3, so I had to get used to the feel of the auto.) I think the 5spd is a better mate to the 2.0t, but they are REALLY hard to find in the converts.
A couple other things - the parking brake had a good bit of play in it. Is this something that I could adjust at home pretty easily? Also, just one horn sounded. Is that fairly accessible and fixed?
The car has apparently been regularly serviced and just had it's 60K from Saab. Is this a major svc? Recent repairs include a new dealer installed A/C compressor and new (non-dealer installed) alternator and top motor. Anything else I should be preparing for at this mileage? The seller is asking 11,200 and I am going to offer 9,500 (which I think he would probably accept.)
I have looked at 9-3s as well, but for some reason I think the 900 is a much better looking body style - maybe its the slimmer bumpers or something. Just wondering if this sounds like a pretty good deal, or if I am getting ready to head into the nickle-and-dime years with this vintage of 900.
thanks all!!
