After four years of the wife driving the NG900 in a nasty downtown commute, she inherited my Geo Prizm (200k miles!) and I drive the NG. Its tires (Goodyear GPS) were in horrible shape on the sides, and in perfect shape in the center. I had serious shaking of the steering wheel at times, and even had the dealer look at it, align, etc. One wheel rim (steel) was a bit bent out of shape thanks to a pothole. Finally during an oil change we saw the front tires were shot, the belt was showing. Not even 50k miles, thank you Goodyear. Tires were rotated and it made no difference. The car was very sensitive to tire balance / pressure differences. The shake was on the steering wheel, speed sensitive, and NASTY at times.

Stopped at Discount Tire and put on a set of BFGoodrich somethings or others. Wheel rim was fixed, checked for true, and rebalanced. The shake is GONE. Wow. We're talking GONE.

My questions... What would damage four tires like that? underinflation? I was always around 30psi cold. One was unbalanced but what about the other three in terms of damage to the sides? Could it have been cheap tires (SAM's Club)? The Discount Tire guy said that this model of Goodyears had steel belts in the center, not at the sides and that could flex the tire more and cause wear. Also, is the NG900 more sensitive to tire or wheel ailments? the Geo never shakes with 200k miles on the wheel and alignments once a decade... Never did with four Michelins with 80k miles on them and 15 psi on one tire, either :-)
