Violent Shaking, need help!

Yesterday when I was driving I started noticing my steering wheel shaking. Today, the shaking got significantly worse, shaking my arms around and making it pretty difficult to keep it going straight. It has progressed from solely steering wheel shake to the entire car shaking to the point that it makes the windows rattle. I checked the tires today and they're fine. The car shakes most violently when the RPMs are at around 2500 and the gas pedal is pressed down about a quarter of the way. It also shakes violently when I let the car coast while in drive. When all this was happening while I was driving on the thruway, I put the car into neutral to see what would happen, and instead of the tach dropping to 1000, it stayed at 2000RPM. After I got it home and parked it, when it was in Park the idle immediatly surged to 2000 RPM. Oddly enough, if the car is under acceleration above 3000 RPM or below 2000RPM there is little shaking except in the steering wheel itself, and immediatly after my foot comes off the pedal the shaking returns throughout the car. The car also stops shaking when it comes under braking. There appears to be no loss in HP. Any ideas guys?
Thanks in advance,
~KP
