It depends on whether or not you have the 5spd manual or the automatic or the turbo. The 5spd uses the modified CV joint on the inner, the others use the tripod universal joint. The inner CV joint has to be replaced as a unit. eEuroparts lists them at $300. The tripod joint is about $40 (though withs lots of miles the driver that the tripod fits into can wear also). Interestingly enough eEuroparts have the descriptions backwards calling the tripod a CV joint and the rzeppa CV joint a universal joint. Whatever. Anyway they do have the model description for the appropriate joint correct, check their model descriptions or your handy manual. Since I'm doing that job now (and I have done similar jobs on a 900 classic) I'd say it is not for the beginner to tackle. It requires breaking loose the steering ball type joint, the axel, the lower ball joint and then getting the shaft out (which for me has been a huge pain). Messy job. I'd take it to a good mechanic and have them do the manual check of the joint first. From my point of view, if you have the rzeppa CV joint I'd say there isn't much chance of failure if the boot is intact. The tripod bearings I have had trouble with on the classic without the boot breaking. Let us know what you find!
