When putting the axel shaft back in after doing a boot job I noticed what appears to have caused the boot to go bad in the first place. The rubber brake hose going to the caliper appears to have been riding on the top of the boot!!! The hose was scored deeply in 2 places one of which looks like is was riding on the rib of the boot where it split (it split on the edge of one bellows). Sure enough with it back together the hose sits dangerously close to the boot.
Now this hose has NEVER been replaced, nor has the caliper. I checked the other (drivers) side and with the car on the ground the hose isn't very close to the boot. The hose mountings on both the caliper and the inside of the wheel well look right. The hose is long enough so it has a twist in it. On the drivers side the twist is away from the boot but on the passengers side it is towards the boot.
This really appears to be a factory messup. I suppose when the car was put together one would want to get the hose to twist away from the boot and someone just messed up. (my guess). Either that or both hoses are too long.
All I can say is this REALLY makes me mad.
I wondered why what looked like a perfectly fine boot would split.
I suggest you all check your brake hoses next time your under the car.
