Thanks for the advice from those who have gone before (Anders in particular). I pulled the console out in about 30 minutes, fought with the shift linkage for a while and swapped the ignition switch. Took a bit longer to get it back together, but I wanted to make sure there were no creaks or rattles. Took the opportunity to replace the shift linkage with the newer style and install a rebuilt starter to replace the burned out one.
Incidentally, if you live in L.A. there is a great starter/alternator rebuilding place on Washington and Figueroa. Took 1 hour and $90 to rebuild our old one.
Now the car starts and shifts like it should. No abs light either (thanks again Anders), and tuneup parts are on the way to cure the CEL. I even got the cruise control working (clutch switch was out of adjustment).
Only one hitch in all this - I lost the tiny clip that holds the heater control cable in the HVAC module. Damn thing popped out and dropped on the shop floor never to be seen again. Have it on order at the dealer, though, along with a couple of brackets that some previous mechanic decided to break rather than undo. I really hate it when I have to redo other peoples' work.
Now I'm finally starting to like this car. It still needs an exhaust leak fixed and a few odds and ends, but it drives & rides very nicely. The PO claimed it needed a clutch, but there was a reciept for one about 12k miles ago, and a new cable less than 3k miles ago. If it doesn't slip going up my hill then it won't slip.
If anyone needs my old shift linkage (for free) hit me up. It is the early style, but nearly brand new.
