You've got to remove the center console. Start with the two "kick panels" on the side; those are easy. Check a Haynes manual or the archives for complete instructions. Depending on the problem, though, you may be able to access things enough just by removing one of the side panels.

Once you have enough access, you can carefully pop out different rectangular segements of the center console controls. You can do this with the climate control zone. The knob is connected to a plastic shaft, which then engages a plastic screw/valve in the back that is connected to the heater box. I've seen a few reports on here from folks that had the shaft break or come loose.

When I replaced my ignition switch, I had all the center console out and didn't get the temp knob reconnected properly. With some fussing, I was able to fix it just by removing one of the side panels and fiddling around.
